child labor

yesterday i decided to surf the net for sites on child labor. one of the sites i saw was this. kids as young as 5 years old, scavenging through landfills for up to 12 hours a day to help support their families, or themselves...these kids make 1 dollar a day. and this is just 1 form of child labor. in some countries, kids are chained to their work station or sold into the sex market. this is a world epidemic too. it happens more than you know in the great usa. this doesn't just happen overseas. here are some stats on child trafficking:
  • Human trafficking is the second-largest organized crime in the world.
  • 25 percent of all child sex tourists around the world are U.S. citizens.
  • The largest number of people trafficked into the United States come from East Asia and the Pacific (5,000 to 7,000 victims). The next highest numbers come from Latin America and from Europe and Eurasia, with between 3,500 and 5,500 victims from each. (U.S. Departments of Justice, Health & Human Services, State, Labor, Homeland Security, Agriculture, and the U.S. Agency for International Development. 2004. Assessment of U.S. Government Activities to Combat Trafficking in Persons. Washington, D.C.: U.S. Department of Justice.)
  • An estimated 10,000 or more people from at least 39 countries (including the United States) are working as forced laborers in the United States, according to a September 2004 report of the Human Rights Center at the University of California at Berkeley (http://www.freetheslaves.net/files/Hidden_Slaves.pdf)
  • The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency estimates that 50,000 people are trafficked into or transited through the U.S.A. annually as sex slaves, domestics, garment, and agricultural slaves
think it doesn't happen in your neighborhood?
