wireless help

my laptop was taken away from me at work and i was given a desktop in the 2 counties i work in. it was the only computer that seems to pick up the neighborhood wireless. our apple doesn't. we needed to get wireless in the fall anyway, but now we really do need to get on the ball. it's hard not having internet at home!!!

what wireless provider do y'all use? are there any cheap ones out there? we have comcast cable but no phone line. who's doing what with wireless in the lansing/holt area? any info would be greatly appreciated!

I hope I'm misunderstanding you when you talk about connecting to 'neighborhood wireless'. If you just booted up your laptop and connected to the first wifi signal that you found and it wasn't your's from YOUR OWN router, then that is technically illegal. The chances of you getting caught are slim but it is possible to detect you using a signal and they can press charges. The outcome was not good for those who have been caught to date.

I'm also not sure what you mean when you ask who our wireless provider is...
If you want to go purely wireless, then you have to go with a cell phone company service and get a card that plugs into your computer to connect to their network. Still a pretty expensive solution with speeds and reliability that don't rival land line connections yet. Otherwise, you just get normal internet (DSL from Telco) or (Cable Modem from Cable) and send it through a wifi enabled router. Word to the wise when you do set up your own wifi signal in your house....enable encryption or your neighbor will surf on your signal just like you've been doing to others before they took your laptop away. :-)

What a condemning response....

Kim, I personally use Comcast, and they're decent enough to recommend.

Ask Nate Klan to recommend you a wireless router, he's your man!

wowza...i love getting condemning comments from anonymous folks! it's such a pleasing way to start ones morning. but seriously, we have a neighbor that has 2 wireless accounts. a secure one for his family and an unsecured one for the neighborhood. seeing that he has set it up for anyone in the hood to use and he knows we all use it, technically it's not illegal. but thanks for the overwhelming concern.

thanks Eric for your advice. comcast has a special right now we may jump on that's super cheap for 6 months and doesn't require a contract. Steve's looking into it. i'll have him talk to nate too.
