We struggle with our own insecurities, the knowledge of our shortcomings. We long to be accepted as we are. Free to be silly, serious, stupid, and vulnerable. This vulnerability is where true love grows.
The sharing of secrets with someone, our secrets. Things we haven’t told anyone because we think they will reject us. Thoughts to be drug out examined and wistfully shared. Looking into their eyes for understanding and acceptance. These are the moments we long for. They happen in whispered embraces, in half-light where we feel safest, the lack of light hiding our stares, looking to the other with hope. Hope that this is someone whom will finally understand me, accept me. This is where the draw of pornography comes in. Since there is no commitment, there is no chance of rejection.
This longing for acceptance is due to the fall, and our separation from our Lord. And once saved I think it is a lifelong struggle to get back to Him. I think it is apt that we are thought of as “babes” in Christ when we first get saved. We start crawling, then find our feet as we are holding on to that verse that strikes our heart, and we stumble forward on this path called sanctification. I can’t wait to the day when I can run full steam into His arms. The day when the burdens of this world fall away and I can be free to truly love.
But there is also a part of us that needs to be understood through someone else’s embrace, the embrace holding us tighter when we feel the most vulnerable, the embrace making us feel what we long for …safe. Safe from this fallen world. A temporary haven we can rest in until we go home to glory, not ours but His. This is the lie of pornography, that you can find this embrace in it. Instead it rips part of ourselves from us. A part that was meant for our true love. A part we will have to struggle for years to get back.
For those that struggle there is hope. I have searched all my life for that hope. I have the scars to prove it. The reality is that true hope comes from the commitment to others. Reaching out is the start of healing.
In some way I think this helps us to understand ourselves, or at least accept ourselves. To be accepted by another whom you love is the deepest compliment that can be given, and the flame that burns away the darkness.
