infant vaccinations ~ birth plan

i wrote out our birth plan last week.  well, i found one on-line and then changed it to fit our wants/needs, but i completed it!  that is, until suzanne told me that they routinely vaccinate infants before they leave the hospital.  what's that about?  why would you vaccinate a child that is only a day or 2 old?  haven't their little bodies been through enough?  when i think of their travels on their birth day, it makes me a bit sad...

here they are all warm and cozy in their warm little dark whirlpool, when all of a sudden the contractions hit.  so baby is being squeezed and moved into the tight quarters of a pelvis.  then, at some point their warm bathtub is emptied...so nothing is keeping them protected from contractions and bones and compressions.  then they travel and get squeezed through this small little hole and pop out into a cold, extremely bright room...sometimes dr.'s or nurses will take the babe to a table to prod the little miracle, put medicine in their eyes and poke them with needles.

could you image?  i think it's interesting that most people can never remember their birth.  many people can remember memories from a very young age, but rarely never about birth.  i wonder if it's so traumatic that we just repress it.  poor punkin!

so the last thing i want for my little child is to get a vaccine on their birth day or anytime in the first few months.  i just don't know why the hospital would ever think they should be in-charge of that anyway?  that's a decision that my husband and i'll make with our pediatrician.  that's one thing that frustrates me with a hospital birth.  i fear that they think they know best for my child.  that they think they have the right to perform tests and provide treatments without our knowledge or consent.  although it's in my birth plan that nothing is done to our child without our consent, i'll be cautious about their intentions.  and i'm so glad that we'll have our doula with us to advocate in our behalf.  that makes me relax and smile.  yea for midwives and doulas!!

Maybe you've already researched this.
The only immunization provided at birth was the 1st round of Hep B. Pregnancy brain attacks plus it's been 2 years since actually giving birth, but I believe that it didn't happen until the on-call pediatrition saw him for the first time. Also, I think I had to sign off on it.
The only think I think you need to worry about right after the delivery is whether or not you want the vitamin K drops when they do the clean up and Apgar testing.
Hope this helps.
:) You don't have to worry 'bout a thing darlin' except for snuggling with your newborn babe! If you don't want them to vaccinate, we'll clearly state that in your birth plan, and make sure whoever is there will be made aware of your wishes! The only thing I want you to worry about on your child's birth day is ... well.. NOTHING! :) No worries!
