a call for pediatricians

steve and i figured that we should start looking for pediatricians. we've talked to a few people, but i know there are quite a few ma's and pa's out there in the lansing area, that would be willing to give us some advice. so here's the questions:
who do you take your kids to?
would you recommend them to others?
are there any pros/cons for your ped.?
thanks in advance for giving us the info...this whole parenting thing is pretty scary! we hadn't even started looking before we lost Jorai and i know it's super important to find one before the birth...so i guess now's a good time.

We take Jake to Capital Area Peds near the corner of Pine Tree and Jolly. We see Dr. Mora, but there are two others. I've been happy with her so far --- she takes time to talk with us and likes interacting with Jake.

Well, we don't see them yet (first appt is Monday), but we have heard wonderful things about the Kozlowskis. They are on Mt. Hope at Cedar. We are switching to them because they don't have a problem with our unique choices (no vaccinations, cosleeping, etc.)

We were bad and waited until Luke was born before we found a pediatrician.

We take him to MSU Pediatricians. We've been happy with all the doctors there but our favorite is Dr. Gonoguntla. She never rushes us, she takes the time to answer our questions. She has an open mind and never just resorts to writing prescriptions. I also like that she always seems genuinely excited to see our son.

The office staff is extremely competent and friendly. We rarely have to wait long once we arrive for an appointment. They have always been able to get us in on short notice, and the on-call doctors are great about calling back after hours.

My only complaint is that they only do appointments between 8:30 and 3:30 and they're not open Saturdays, but that's coming from a mom with a job. It wouldn't be an issue for you if you're going to be staying home.

When Noah was first born, we took him to Okemos Peds (on Grand River near Dobie) and were unfortunately disappointed. There's one pediatrician there we liked, but the office as a whole wasn't run well and several of the docs weren't too friendly. If you decide to think about a family practice physician, we currently take Noah to Dr. Cooper in Lansing and have loved him. Another good, very holistic family practice doc is Jami Newman at Sparrow Family Practice. She was our neighbor for a couple of years, and has helped us out over and over. She'd be my top recommendation, for many reasons other than knowing her personally. :) Hope you don't get so many suggestions it's hard to decide!

it looks like you are getting a variety of recommendations.
i must delurk and chime in myself.
we take Paul (and the little one arriving in April) to Lansing Pediatric Associates on Lake Lansing near Eastwood Towne Center. He sees Dr. Takagishi.
I initially chose another doc when in the hospital because he was the ped I saw when I was a kid, but Dr. T was on call and I liked him enough to stick with him.
They have a great variety of docs (though I've never seen any other than Dr. T). They have long hours (till 7:30) and Saturdays are open for sick kid visits. They also have a nurse line available for any questions.

Good luck!

We take our two yr old, Blake and our 1 yr old, Eva to Dr Leslie Reynolds. She works in a group called Great Lakes Pediatrics. The other two Dr's are Dr Bayhart and Dr Hart, both are also females. I don't know if that makes a difference to you, but I find it easier to relate to someone who has been a mom before :) Dr Reynolds is so kind, gentle, and patient. She has this unspoken way of communicating with infants that just amazes me every time I take my little ones in. She is also very down to earth, and will listen to any concern you may have and offer realistic advice. The other two docs are also awesome. My daughter, Eva, got RSV when she was 11 days old. She was admitted to Sparrow and we were there for almost a week. It was sooo scary, mostly because it can cause sleep apnea. I felt this sick worry that I was going to loose her to SIDS. Dr Bayhart was doing rounds that week and she was so caring, she helped me put my mind at ease. Anyway, sorry for such the long explanation, but I really feel this awesome connection to this group. I know I can trust them with my children's lives.Their ph is 887-3000 if you feel so inclined.(yes I have it memorized :)
